Warm up today is a review of the water stuff we have covered so far. Next we reviewed water quality indicators (temperature, turbidity, bio-indicators, pH, and dissolved oxygen) and healthy environments in lakes and rivers. ACIDS AND BASES...92 Next we took notes on acids, bases and pH on page 92. If you were absent this class, here are the notes. Next,we moved around a little bit a did some pH testing on the back of 92. Lastly, we drew a pH scale and placed the items we tested on the pH scale as well as a few others on page 93. MOCK Math EOG Early dismissal Reminder the next 2 days will be A days for science and social studies.
Today we read an article for our warm up about the Dangers of DHMO!!! Students were shocked by how often they come in contact with DHMO, and what are the side effects of DHMO. Next we went over some common causes and problems of water pollution in North Carolina. What we realized is that most of the problems come down to too much excess nutrients we are adding to our water. If you were not here, you will need to get the handout from me and take a look at the powerpoint to fill in the answers. This handout goes on the back of page 90 in your notebook. Lastly, on page 91 we went over some Water Quality Indicators. Water quality indicators are the 5 things scientists look at when they are trying to determine if the water is safe for the organisms living in it...NOT YOU!! These indicators are pH levels, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, and bio-indicators. You will read ach handout, and then fill in the chart and answer the questions on page 91. Here is a list of the questions you needed to answer on page 91 .
Here are all the handouts you will need to complete the questions. You can ignore the questions on the bottom of each handout, I want you to answer the questions that I have given you above. Please answer the questions using complete sentences on page 91. 8-e-1-3-stations-water-quality.pdf Download File
Warm up today is an article on Water Intoxication. The contest is called "Hold your Wee for a Wii".
Then, we reviewed the River Basin Assignment and reviewed specific questions about aquifers, river basins and estuaries. Next, we participated in an activity that simulated the activity into and out of an estuary. 1. Teacher Appreciation is coming up. Here is a link to send your teacher a note of appreciation. http://bit.ly/2oiHsMB Warm up - Read the article on the Flint Water Crises http://goo.gl/EUla2g Title page 87: Flint Water Crisis After you read the article, answer the following questions on page 87. 1. People started to feel sick in Flint when their water supply was switched from Lake Huron to the Flint River. What was the motivation behind making the switch? List some reasons behind making this choice? 2. The people started to complain about the water in April of 2014 but state officials did not do anything until the fall of 2015. What evidence was collected that showed the water was polluted that made them take action? 3. What health effects can children experience with increased levels of lead in their blood? 4. Where is the lead coming from? Next, we reviewed a little on the Water Cycle, reemphasizing that the majority of the water found on the Earth is salt water and most evaporation occurs from the ocean water. On page 88 in out notebook we added two vocabulary boxes for permeable and impermeable. Next, we used the North Carolina's River Basins booklet to research some information on the fresh water resources in North Carolina. If you did not finish the River Basin Research Assignment, here is the link to the booklet we used in class and here are the questions. Welcome back! I hope you had a great spring break. 28 days until the EOGS!!! Our warm up today is an introduction to hydrology and the hydrosphere. Next, we set up our notebooks for the LAST UNIT of the year. Woo hoo!!! Hydrology Cover...83 Table of Contents...84 Next we took notes on page 85 on where all the water is on Earth. The notes for this page are found here if you were absent. Jay Z did some work with the Program "Water for Life" awhile ago. He traveled around to different parts of Africa and looked at the conditions when water is a scarcity. We watched some of the excerpts in class today. Then, we got up and moved around to simulate the water cycle. As we walked around, you filled in a chart indicating where you were traveling to throughout the water cycle. Finally we completed the following independently on pages 85 and 86 in out notebooks. On the front or back of page 85, answer the following questions using complete sentences.
1. What are 5 ways your family uses water? 2. What are 5 ways you could conserve water? 3. What is desalination? 4. Where is most of the freshwater found on Earth? 5. In what state do you find most of the freshwater? (solid, liquid, gas?) 6. Where do you find the liquid freshwater? 7. The average person uses 230 liters of water a day. How much does that person use in a week? 8. Create a pie chart showing the different percentages of water to land on Earth 9. Create a pie chart showing the different percentages of salt water to fresh water 10. Create a pie chart with the information we **** in the chart. On the water cycle handout, go to www.dictionary.com and define the words related to the water cycle.
Warm up today is on Selective Breeding. Read the following article on Selective Breeding. You should be looking for the differences between biotechnology and selective breeding.
Next we completed our notebook check (1st forma grade of the 4th quarter) and also turned in our brochure (2nd formal grade of the 4th quarter). If you have not turned in your brochure by Thursday, I will not be accepting it after Spring Break. Next we took our Unit test on Cells and Microbiology (3rd foraml grade for 4th quarter). The test is on school net so you should be getting your graes immediately. If you did not watch that hilarious video on EOG and testing you, need to watch it. I am attaching a list of all the kids that need to watch it and am also attaching the video link. Once you watch it, please let me know so I can check you off. If you already watched it, you do not have to watch it again. Ear buds are up front if you need them. EOG video link: data.ncsu.edu/nctestfiles/video/NCTest_Desktop.ogv |
