Create a T chart to show this evidence. 3.Paragraph 1 and paragraph 4 use the phrase “new blood”. Explain the meaning of “new blood” and the effect of new blood on the Panther population. 4.Using evidence from the text, explain why genetic variation is important for species survival. 5.This article was written over 6 years ago (December 2010). Warm Up - Is it "fitter"? Read the following situation about the "fitter" organisms. Answer the question in your warm up folder Next, we did a quick review of genetics. The Genetics 101 notes will go on page 57 in your notebooks. Here are the notes if you were absent. This should all be a review from 7th grade. For our assignment today we took at look at different adaptations for plants and animals using stations. As a class we read an article on Adaptations, which is station 4. Station 1 was vocabulary. You can use www.vocabulary.com for the definitions, make sure you look for the scientific definition. Stations 2 and 3 are handouts that you can pick up from the back of the room. Our warm up today was a review of natural selection and adaptation. Next we went over the natural selection homework and reviewed the peppered moths. Next we completed a bird beak lab. Using 4 different types of beaks and 4 different food sources we competed for food. Some of you made adaptations with your beak by flipping it around, some of you died out because you couldn't pick up any food. After completing the lab, we graphed the results and completed the conclusion. If you did not finish the conclusion, here are the questions.
1. According to your results, out of all the beaks, which species has nature selected for? Which species has nature has selected against? 2. According to your results, which “worm” is nature selecting for? What species has nature selected against? 3. If we looked at this population of birds and worms in the next 5 years, how do you think the population will change? 4. How does this activity demonstrate the concept of natural selection? Warm Up - Read this article on Vestigial Organs and answer the questions from projector in your warm up folder. Next, as a simulation of natural selection, we went outside to hunt down some wacky mac. The purpose of the the simulation is to show how nature selects for a specific species. We finished up our notes from page 54 in our notebook on Natural Selection and Adaptations. If you were absent, here are the notes.

Finally, we completed an activity simulating natural selection using the Peppered Moths and Industrial Revolution. The website for this activity can be found here. Watm uptoday was introduction to evolution and adaptations.
Next we organzied our notebooks for the new unit. New cover sheet, new table of contents...our unit will be called EVOLUTION, ENERGY and ECOSYSTEMS. Our unit on evolution sometimes can be a bit contraversial so to start the unit we go over the diffrences between Laws and Theories on the back of page 52. Evolution is a theory. For the new unit, we started off with some vocabulary. On page 53 in your notebook. Define the following words(use the textbook). You will have to use the glossary and/or the index. 1.Mutation 2.Natural selection 3.Adaptation 4.Vestigial organs 5.Evolution 6.Speciation Next we watched some video clips on biological evolution through Discovery Education. Before the vacation we discussed several of the theories behind the dinosaur extinction (volcanism, asteroid, ice age, and radiation). The Day the Mesozoic Died shows us more evidence that supports the asteroid theory.
Test day!!! We did a quick warm up and turned in our study guides. We also did our notebook checks. Grades should all be updated by Wedensday. I will get the test grades in ASAP! THe test will be a link on line (not school net) and you will put your answers on scantron sheets. You will need a number 2 pencil for the test. Here is the link for the test. You should not be on ANY OTHER site except this file. If Isee you on any other place, you will get a ZERO on the test. When you are done with the test, close your lap top and turn in your scantron. You may read the magazine in front of you or read a book. Warm up today was a review of all the different methods for dating rocks and fossils. Make sure you know which methods are used for relative dating and whoch methods are used for relative dating. Next, we went around the room and read about the different theories scientists have about how the dinosaurs became extinct. Then students had to make a decision about what theory they thought had the most evidence to support the theory.
Reminder: Study guide is due Monday and Tuesday. Test and notebook check will be on the same day. If you are going to be out for the test, I need you to schedule a time to make it up before vacation.
